The end of the 140 characters of fame?

Do you like me to observe a trend change in the length of the content we consume on the web? In recent years, content experienced a downward trend: the videos have become shorter, podcasts are standardized to 45 minutes max, the texts of bills have shrunk when they have not been totally replaced by the tweets of 140 characters.

We explained that Twitter had reduced the time spent blocking. It was said that 140 characters is enough. We have (un) showed that the success of Tumblr and Posterous was the unmistakable sign that Internet content needed shorter.

When major bloggers have abandoned Blogosphere to twitter or newsletter, we still cry at the death of blogging, a recurring theme for years in the blogosphere.

We had so much bloggers who specialize in certain areas, and so many blogs and aggregators of themes that we come in recent months to focus on those famous "Curators" of content (of which I spoke here this week), which we will filter to the best of the web.

However, it seems instead that all elements are present today for a return to feature content. I look at the first Ipad , which is a great platform for consultation content longer, written or videos. I read ebooks , renting movies , stores documents in pdf with applications such as GoodReader . And what about the phenomenal success of Instapaper that keeps long contents of web pages to read later, in their entirety, even offline. For those like me who read on the subway, instatpaper became as useful as Byline (which allows me to read my son feeds offline) Have you heard of readability? An application to make the content of a web page more readable by removing the superfluous. This application has been integrated into Safari. For me it's a sign of the times that do not lie: we want to consume content length, even spend more time. Besides, it's what I like about twitter: exchange of URLs that refer me to more reading more.

Did you know that this content is long, longread English even have their twitter account @ longread and # hashtags longread very popular? They even created a website that I love longread.com that has this unique feature (to my knowledge) interesting to classify items according to their duration. We know it will take at least 16 minutes to read.

Even Quora, which is both talking geeks, and spamming me more often than not, has this advantage over Twitter to respond without limitation, and to agglomerate the answers to a question.

I am not predicting the return of blogs, to me they have always been significant, even if they went out of style as it seeks to position itself on the newest of which everyone will talk tomorrow. But my point is that whatever industry you're in, and this includes philanthropy, a portion of increasing Internet will seek to understand, and therefore will search request content length, depth and thorough analysis of their chosen field.

Here I quote the e status of today @ Loic Le Meur: " Dear blog, I missed you.'re Taking Time to Bring So Much to Maintain value in a social world networkking. You force me to think again "

Stop and think. This could be the new mantra of the web. This will at least mine ...

Curation Nation, you'll hear about

Whether you work in traditional media or social media, or what is more rare, like me, in both, you are already exposed to the phenomenon of "curators ".

have yet to find a french equivalent to the term "Curator". I can immediately tell you is that this term will become increasingly common in your readings. One of the leaders of the explosion of this trend is Steven Rosenbaum, and his upcoming book " Curation Nation "

Some of the most influential thinkers of the web from Silicon Valley have already read the book and have already made an apology. The book site Curation Nation (and yes, even books now have their website) is the messenger of these same critics unanimously positive and seem to foreshadow a new trend, or at least the next buzzword. The phenomenon is not new, those on Tumblr example Curators are in years.

The Curator, historically, was the curator of the museum. He decided to acquire a particular work, the show or not to give him more or less space in the museum . Transposed to the web world, this notion of Curator implies that the aggregation of quality content becomes as important, if not more important than content creation as such. Individuals, such as organizations are advancing their own value based on the quality of content not they create, but they broadcast.

In a certain extent, Twitter works a bit on this principle. Most of the world's broadcast content, references, URLs which come from other sources. Twitter has become my social filter. Looking at the timeline, I know the links suggested by some people will always interesting. Those that grow consistently uninteresting content do not last long in my timeline I have to say ... All those who are on twitter are my social filters, curators of my information. The advantage is that I no longer need to read the newspaper to be informed: information relevant to me I will find itself.

It seems that the mainstream media of this world would benefit by creating applications to customize their content and become curators. The advantage is that by providing such tools, they would offer individuals the opportunity to become their editors of their newspapers on the web. Besides if they do not themselves others will for them to create platforms attorney. Did you know for example that it is now impossible to make a iphone application for a radio? If you offer against an application for several radio stations, or to cut content from several stations, where the Apple App store is still open you. Did you know that has developed its Wordpress Plugin proxy?

I'll bet that quite expensive applying for iPad Murdoch, who was released this week but was postponed, will be a first step in the platforms of Curation. If I was a big media group, I would create an application to subscribe to certain articles of some of my magazines, on the map. And if all the major groups agreed that I pass through a single application, I have a store that would send me articles Geo, National Geographic, the Huffington Post, the Gazette and the Times directly my iPad. yes I SIAS I dream in color, but who knows ... Flipboard is a first step, except that it sends me all the content of some magazines only.

Until I see that also for ordinary Internet users, or for certain organizations, proxy tools to develop and become increasingly popular.
If you are an NGO for example, you could use one of these new tools that allow you to filter what you read, the agglomerate and share. Here is a list ... the length of which shows that the trend is heavy.

The power of viral to help a homeless

It seems this video is the first "Viralo-buzz" of 2011. It's a great American story. A good guy, radio host in Columbus, Ohio, which has fallen into the downward spiral of poverty: unemployment, drugs, street and daily misery. He made the round at a crossroads. He holds a placard stating his incredible voice, his gift of god. Against a piece he did his show. His name is Ted Williams. Today it is the new star of YouTube, with nearly 8 million views, and some are already comparing to Susan Boyle says it all.

Since the video is gone, Ted Williams went from nobody that people were unaware of the side of the road, social media trends, so that the job offers he has showered so spoiled for choice. Because his voice is actually incredible. A truly American story with a happy ending to boot.

I wonder if what interests me most about this story is the media's power to suddenly come to identify a story that will educate the masses, or whether the figure for the world of philanthropy a beautiful story, well told, will always find its audience. I will not be surprised that Ted Williams is carried back before long by an organization that helps homeless not to testify on behalf of his experience and how these wonderful people have helped ...

At least that what most pleased me most is this definition that Ted Williams gave the radio: "Theatre of mind". It's so ca. It happens that I love radio, and I have more chance to be currently working for a public radio (actually Radio Service of Canada), and this definition is so good that I adopt it instantly.

Update: must give credit to Reddit site for launching this new , and organized his "viralization. It all started here thanks to Reddit. T Reddit C'es also informs me that Ted Williams, in addition to getting a job with the Cleveland Cavaliers is offered by the home team a free .

Update 2: For a happy ending to the U.S. and see the new face of Ted Williams, see this video of MSNBC, which summarizes the history .

I have no resolutions for 2011 ... and does not have

For my first post of the year, I would like to make a confession. I always had the uneasy feeling that New Year's resolutions were merely "to do list" that lasted much longer than the month of January. However, I do not like the New Year's resolutions nor the to do list. That is said.

Now, what bothers me with these resolutions, it is firstly that they change every year as if a year was a magical cycle of personal achievement, and secondly that it imprison us from the first day of the year in a straitjacket of stress (and often bad conscience when you do not meet our resolutions).

So I set the problem. No more resolutions! I accept the resolutions of 10 years, or that of the present moment. I chose the latter, those that allow me to constantly tell me: yes, I feel like it or not, this I do not do it. It does not mean that I am not long-term projects (I already know where I'll be for Christmas 2011!) But it is not a resolution.

The big advantage of this system is that it gives me the right to change its mind without warning. For example, I decided that from today, I'll double my reading rate and either read one book a week but twice. If after two months I see that it is too restrictive, I change my mind and decided to return to one. It is only my opinion. I do not bowl anyone with my resolutions and especially I'm not complaining that I do hast not required, and meanwhile I read 8 books more ...

What I've realized since I lost loved ones, is that nothing is more important than the emotions of the moment. If you know how to live your life, you will not need resolutions for next year. So me, my resolution early this year never changes: it is to live today as if this year was the last.
